Smoking and the law

Smoking can be awful for our health, so the Government made some strong rules to make sure everyone stays safe, whether they smoke or not.

  • No Smoking in Certain Places. You can’t smoke in public spaces, at work, or on public transportation. This is to keep the air clean for everyone.
  • No Selling to Kids. It’s against the law to sell cigarettes to anyone under 18 years old, and grown-ups can’t buy them for kids either.
  • Hidden Cigarettes. Stores can’t show cigarettes openly. They keep them hidden, so it’s not tempting for anyone, especially kids.
  • No Buying Abroad and Selling Here. You can’t bring cigarettes from other countries or duty-free shops and sell them in the UK. This helps control where cigarettes come from.
  • No Smoking in Cars with Kids It’s not allowed to smoke in a car if there are kids or young people under 18 inside. This helps keep the air in the car clean and healthy.
  • No Ads for Cigarettes. Starting in 1964, the government said no to showing cigarette ads on TV. Now, you probably won’t see any ads for cigarettes anywhere. This is because smoking can cause really serious health problems for people in the UK.

Remember, these rules are here to protect everyone and keep us healthy!.
